Understanding Resource Limits, Causes and Solution

This is the part of the web hosting technology that is rarely talked about but a very crucial part as well. Most time clients will ask, why is my account suspended? They are surprise because they thought they are on the unlimited package and as such nothing at all should infringe on their site since they are at liberty to host as much contents as much. Yes you can host contents without restriction as long they are not prohibited contents, and does not pose threat to server stability.

Where the mistake lies is the failure to read and understand our terms and condition in which we clearly state our unlimited policy and what we mean by it. Careful now before you join the vast majority that believes unlimited hosting is a scam and conclude unfavorably. Whether unlimited hosting or not, all hosting provider have what is called “Resource Limits” that is usually places on each server to prevent one client taking up all server resources which may lead to server breakdown and this is usually stated in the terms and condition of all hosting provider and most potential clients rarely read.

I will break all these server resource stuff down so you understand what I mean. Each server has it own specification ranging from memory and number of CPU; these are the two basic idea revolving around resource limits. Other important aspect that is as important as the first two includes maximum number of MYSQL and FTP connections, maximum number of email sent hourly and per clients. Other also includes cron entries, apache and most of all prohibited contents on servers.

Let me officially present to you our resource limitation policies, please review them carefully and if this article is unclear in some way kindly send all further questions and enquiries to [email protected]

• Memory usage may not exceed 10% per domain/file/application. These include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
• CPU usage may not exceed 10% per domain/file/application, these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
• Apache connections may not exceed 30 connections
• 15 MySQL maximum user connections allowed
• 50 emails per hour, per domain
• Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.
• Run any type of web spider or indexer (including Google Cash / AdSpy) on shared servers.
• Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.
• Run any bit torrent application, tracker, or client. Please note that you may link to torrents off server, but may not host or store them.
• Participate in any file-sharing/peer-to-peer activities
• Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1942, etc.
• Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes

These limitations are put into consideration by server admin to maintain stability and to promote Fair Usage from clients. Excessive CPU & memory usage by one or more clients causes extreme slowness in all areas: MySQL, Email, HTTP and more. If the CPU & memory usage by a few clients gets out of hand, all sites hosted on the machine will return errors and not be accessible in any way or other instability may occur. When such arise, suspension is initiated to prevent that single account from bringing everybody down. Funny enough most clients are unaware of this action as it as nothing to do with unlimited disk quota or bandwidth nor email accounts.

All Resellers clients included master and alpha master clients should take out time to educate their clients on this area so we can smoothly bring about mutual success which is our goal and that is only possible via quality service and quality services is possible when servers are running smoothly.

WordPress

The kind of web site that gets suspended often happened to be wordpress blog. Though most hosting provider will do her best to optimise the servers for best performance, it seems the best is not good enough that is due to the fact that is a dynamic application that use a lot of dynamic contents too. From my observation a lot of wordpress users keep complaining around the world about their blog consuming high server resource. Well I think wordpress developer should take a closer look it this thread and make alternatives too aside sever admin optimizing their site

Poorly Written Script

This is the major cause. WordPress utilise a lot of plug in and component that are written by independent developer and most are not expert in server resource management in PHP and MySQL.

Multimedia

This is another area that consumed the most of CPU. We do not offer hosting for videos or audios at the moment because of the high cost it give to server resources.

Solution

Now that the problems have been understood, the solution will not be far fetch. Simply put “Be careful with what you do with your account” For wordpress user especially do away with all plug-in that are not usable including RSS feed too. Always update as that may do a little help with utilizing a more stable version of your blog and increase security too.

In conclusion, you have seen that the unlimited disk space or bandwidth have nothing to do with server resource limits, it involves the interaction of certain application with the server. It is a matter of understanding how things work so you can make the most of it. So the next you are uploading contents, you are free but make sure your contents or application will not cause issue on the server and bring others down.
